A Chinese boxwood and ebony figural set, 20th century, the chessmen individually carved and raised on bases of square section, kings as Chinese Emperors, queens as Consorts, bishops as Mandarins bearing scrolls, knights as horses' heads with flowing manes, rooks as rearing elephants with curled trunks, pawns as Chinese foot soldiers (one side with circular shields, the other side with scimitars), in a 19th century mahogany and boxwood inlaid box, the king 10cm high, the pawn 8cm high.
