H.W. Hawks' Chessboard

The chessboard of H.W. Hawks, a chess editor who mingled with top chessplayers for over 60 years(!) - from approximately 1880 through 1940.

At different times, Hawks played against Alekhine, Capablanca, and Lasker on this chessboard. Each of the three world champions autographed the back of the board. The chessboard measures overall 24" x 24" and the playing squares are 2.5" x 2.5".

H.W Hawks was a chess enthusiast, having been educated in his early school days in Russia. He became chess editor for the Newcastle Weekly Examiner 1884, the Newcastle Weekly Courant 1894-1901, and the Newcastle Evening Chronicle 1930-1941.
