Calvert and Washington Style Chess Set , circa 1795-1800

Jon's main chess page

An unusual ivory chess set, England, circa 1795-1800, kings with double pierced galleries, queens with single pierced galleries, bishops with elegant pierced finials, knights as arched horses' heads, rooks as double stepped turrets, pawns with baluster knops and ball finials, the king 9cm high, the pawn 4cm high.

The King, Queen, and Bishop are Calvert-style, but the Knights are associated with Washington-style sets. Also note the double stepped rooks. The set is definitely complete and original, so this set may provide evidence that the Calvert-style Kings and Queens were introduced at an early date.
