19th-Century Ivory Chess Set

Jon's main chess page

A "Calvert Pattern" ivory chess set, England, 19th century, one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings surmounted with Maltese crosses, queens with feather finials, bishops with split mitres, knights as horses' heads, rooks as turrets with reeded ball finials, pawns with reeded ball finials, (with some restorations), in a mahogany box with a sliding lid, the king 11cm high, the pawn 5cm high.

Update: after having acquired and studied many Calvert sets, I am not sure why this pattern is referred to as a "Calvert" Pattern.
