Samuel Pepys set and board

The Pepys design is named after the 17th century English diarist Samuel Pepys, who (as legend has it) was presented with such a style set by James II of England. More recent scholarship challenges this view, because no such chess set was found in Pepys' inventory of possessions.

This set and board date from the late 1700's. The pieces are carved in ivory, and the board has inlaid ivory floral patterns.
