Alsatian Ivory Chess Set, 19th Century

Jon's main chess page
Rare unusual early 19th century carved ivory Alsatian chess set, the tiered Kings and Queens with fine open work crowns, Bishops with unusual carved bust heads of grimacing court Jesters, Knights as double headed horses heads, Rooks as round double brickwork towers and Pawns as simple turned men. The main pieces have two-tone finals, tops and feathers. Natural and stained black ivory. The set has German elements, such as the double headed knights, but Jesters are used as Bishops in French sets. King 4 inches (10 cm) high.
