Indian "Central Provinces" Ivory Chess Set

Jon's main chess page

This type of set is usually ascribed to the Indian Central Provinces, but research by Michael Mark indicates that these sets were probably produced in Vizagapatam. This set is somewhat primitive but with a certain charm. This set is typical of the so-called "Central Province" sets, including the bishops represented as large-headed animals. Probably mid 19th century.
