Jon's main chess page

An East India (John Company) ivory figural chess set, Berhampur, circa 1840, Indian States versus the British East India Company, one side with black stained bases, the other side with green stained bases, kings as elephants with princes and mahout riding in howdahs, queens similar, but of smaller size, bishops as camels, knights as horsemen with curved scimitars, rooks as turrets with cannon, pawns as foot soldiers or sepoys (the black and green bases re-stained, the bishops, queens and black king have slightly different bases and are likely to be from a another set of the same period), the king 9cm high, the pawn 5.6cm high.
