Vizagapatham Green and White Ivory Chess Set

An Indian Export ivory chess set, Vizagapatam, early 19th century, one side stained green, the other side left natural, all the chessmen with finely carved and extensive foliate decoration, kings and queens with unusual double crescent finials, bishops as mitres with spires, knights as horses' heads, rooks as turrets, pawns with baluster knops, in a fitted oak presentation case (with a key) (2), the king 13cm high, the pawn 7cm high.

Provenance: The Martine Jeannin Gallery, 13, rue Jacob, Paris.

Exhibited: Louvre des Antiquaries: "Jeux et Divertissements de Salon", March 1994.
