Northern Upright Ivory Chess Set

Jon's main chess page

A nice Northern Upright ivory set, probably by Jaques because it matches the Upright set shown in the Jaques pattern book. This style predates the Staunton pattern, and was supposedly designed by Lord John Hay in the late 1830's or early 1840's. However, Jaques apparently continued to manufacture the set for decades after that.
