Central European Ivory Chess Set, circa 1840

Jon's main chess page

Central European or German, circa 1840, one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with double galleries, queens with single galleries, the king 11.5cm high.

My current opinion is that the German Selenus sets were predecessors to this type of set. The design was then copied in England, first with the Spike pattern sets, then later with the fluted gallery sets.
