A large 5 inch high King “St. George” weighted boxwood and rosewood Chess Set from the mid-19th century. This style of set was named after the St. Georges Chess Club a notable club to which Staunton and other leading 19th century players belonged. One knight from each side with a small mark to their tops to denote kings side when playing. The set came in as sliding lid wooden storage box. Probably 2H 19th century. King 5 inches (12.8 cms.) high.
