These types of sets were manufactured in both ivory and bone, in the Dieppe workshops, late 18th century and early 19th century. This set is bone, although it is particularly well carved for a bone set. Dieppe sets with the "rider-on-horse" knights are sometimes referred to as the Jefferson style of Dieppe set.
